The fog settled over the hills as we pulled our thin coats tightly around ourselves. “Why did we decide to come here again. It’s so cold,” I asked Jacob with a furrowed brow. Shivering, he responded, “Because… look at this place. It’s beautiful.” I looked over my shoulder towards the forest and nodded my head in agreement. It was beautiful.
Nyungwe Forest is one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever seen. The canopies of tree stretch for miles, shielding the life underneath it. As Jacob and I flew down the roads on the back of a couple of motorbikes we saw the expanse of the vast forest and remembered how small we are.
When Jacob and I first started dating, we had no idea or inclination that our lives would lead us all the way to Rwanda, a small landlocked country in East Africa about the size of Massachusetts. At first it was a far-fetched idea that two love birds like ourselves would move across the world together to a new country. Family and friends gave us strange looks, questioning our desire to relinquish opportunities in the US to undertake other pursuits in Rwanda. “Why move there?” They asked, “What do you expect to do there?”
As Jacob and I hiked the hilly terrain of Nyungwe Forest, the questions of friends and family back home drifted away as we were overtaken by the beauty of this small country. The birds chirped around us as a gentle mist fell from the sky and landed on the tall trees. Monkeys watched us from a distance, making sure that we didn’t encroach on their territory. The forest bloomed with life as we continued our descent deep into the lush canopy. Jacob and I looked at each other, sharing a silent agreement that this is an incredible place to live.
